Bus Route from Shosanji to Dainichiji

It is possible to travel from Temple 12, Shosanji, to Temple 13, Dainichiji by bus and on foot.

On this route, walk approximately 8 km from Shosanji to Kamiyama High School-mae, where you can catch the Tokushima Bus Kamiyama Line. Get off at Gyoja-no-kita, then continue on foot to Dainichiji.

The total travel time depends on the connection times, but it takes approximately 4 hours, with a fare of around ¥760.

Public Transport vs. Walking Route

The distance from Shosanji to Dainichiji is approximately 21 km. For walking pilgrims, this is a long section that includes crossing the mountains and requires a good level of fitness.

By taking the bus, however, you can use public transportation for part of the journey.

Walking the Pilgrimage Trail

If you walk the pilgrimage trail, you will cover approximately 21 km from Shosanji to Dainichiji.

The route includes a number of ups and downs, and the long distance can be physically demanding. If you are already tired from the climb to Shosanji the previous day, this section may require even more energy.

Using the Bus

On the bus route, you first walk approximately 8 km from Shosanji to Kamiyama High School-mae.

The route from Shosanji to Kamiyama High School-mae is mostly downhill. Although it is a fairly long walk, it is relatively easier than the uphill route to Shosanji.

From Kamiyama High School-mae, take the Tokushima Bus Kamiyama Line and get off at Gyoja-no-kita. From there, walk approximately 5 km to Dainichiji.

In other words, the bus route does not eliminate the walking entirely. Instead, it reduces the burden of walking the longer mountain section by using the bus for part of the journey.

Which Route Should You Choose?

If you have plenty of energy and are accustomed to walking on mountain trails, you may want to walk the entire pilgrimage route to Dainichiji.

On the other hand, if you are still tired from the previous day’s walk or want to reduce the amount of long-distance mountain walking, taking the bus can be a useful option.

However, even when using public transportation, you still need to walk approximately 8 km from Shosanji to Kamiyama High School-mae and another 5 km from Gyoja-no-kita to Dainichiji.

Therefore, even if you choose public transportation, you should plan your journey with a significant amount of walking in mind.

The bus service is limited, so it is recommended that you check the timetable before setting out and plan your walking time around the bus departure times.
