About the Kochi Temples (Temples 24–39)

Temples 24 to 39 of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage are located in Kochi Prefecture and are collectively known as the “Training Dojo” (Shugyō no Dōjō).

After completing the “Awakening Dojo” in Tokushima, pilgrims enter Kochi, where long stretches of coastline and mountain roads lead from Cape Muroto to Cape Ashizuri. The distances between temples become much longer, and many sections require several days of walking, making this one of the most physically demanding parts of the pilgrimage.

At the same time, Kochi offers some of the pilgrimage’s most spectacular scenery, including breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean, Cape Muroto, Cape Ashizuri, and the natural beauty of the Shimanto River region.

On this website, you’ll find detailed information for each temple from Temple 24, Hotsumisakiji, to Temple 39, Enkōji, including:

  • Temple history and highlights
  • Goshuin (temple stamps) and Omie (pilgrim slips)
  • Walking routes to the previous and next temples
  • Distance and estimated walking time
  • Google Maps route guidance
  • First-hand walking experiences and practical tips

Based on my own experience walking the Shikoku Pilgrimage, this guide provides detailed information to help anyone planning to walk the Kochi section of the route.
