Public Transport vs. Walking Route

There are two ways to travel from Fujiidera to Shosanji: you can either walk the pilgrimage trail or use a combination of trains and buses.

The best option depends not only on the travel time, but also on the difficulty of the mountain trails, the weather, and your physical condition that day.

The Walking Route Is Shorter, but Includes Steep Mountain Trails

For walking pilgrims, the distance from Fujiidera to Shosanji is approximately 12.9 km.

The distance may not seem particularly long, but this section is one of the most challenging parts of the Shikoku Pilgrimage, known as Henro Korogashi, or the “pilgrim tumbler.”

The trail includes steep ascents and descents, and depending on your walking pace, it can take around 6 to 9 hours.

For this reason, it is important not to judge the difficulty based on distance alone. You should also consider the elevation changes and the condition of the mountain trail.

Even with Public Transport, You Still Have to Walk a Mountain Trail

Using trains and buses allows you to bypass part of the mountain pilgrimage trail.

However, taking public transportation does not mean that you can avoid walking to Shosanji.

From Kamiyama High School-mae, where you get off the bus, it is approximately 8 km to Shosanji. The route also includes a climb of around 500 m in elevation.

In other words, the public transportation route is not a way to eliminate the walking distance. It is better understood as a way to bypass part of the more challenging pilgrimage trail by train and bus.

Which Route Should You Choose?

If you are accustomed to long-distance walking and the weather and your physical condition are good, walking the pilgrimage trail to Shosanji can be a rewarding option.

On the other hand, if you are concerned about walking through the mountains or the weather is poor, using a combination of trains and buses can be a useful alternative.

However, even with public transportation, you still have approximately 8 km of walking from Kamiyama High School-mae to Shosanji. It is important not to assume that taking the bus will make the journey to Shosanji easy.

Personally, if the weather is stable and I have plenty of energy, I would choose to walk the pilgrimage trail. If the weather or my physical condition is a concern, I would consider using public transportation to reduce the amount of mountain walking.
