Train & Bus Route from Tairyuji to Byodoji

From Temple 21, Tairyuji, to Temple 22, Byodoji, the journey takes approximately 2–4 hours and costs ¥2,120 when using a combination of the ropeway, bus, and train.

The distance is about 11 km and takes approximately 4 hours on foot.

From Tairyuji, take the ropeway down to Washinosato, then take a bus and train to Aratano Station. From Aratano Station, walk approximately 2 km to Byodoji.

Although you still need to walk the final section when using public transportation, the main advantage is that taking the ropeway from Tairyuji to Washinosato reduces the amount of walking on the mountain trails.

Taking the Train, Bus, and Ropeway

From Tairyuji, take the ropeway down to Washinosato, then walk to Wajiki-higashi Bus Stop.

From there, take a bus to Kuwano-kami, then take a train to Aratano Station. From Aratano Station, walk approximately 2 km to Byodoji.

Although you still need to walk the final section when using public transportation, a major advantage is that the ropeway takes you down from Tairyuji, reducing the physical burden of walking on the mountain trails.

On the other hand, the route involves transfers between buses and trains, so you may have to wait depending on the time of day. If the waiting time is long, you can also consider walking to Byodoji from one of the bus stops along the way.

Walking to Byodoji

The walking route is approximately 11 km and takes about 4 hours.

One advantage of walking is that you do not have to worry about public transportation schedules and can travel at your own pace.

If you have plenty of time and want to enjoy the journey as a walking pilgrim, walking all the way from Tairyuji to Byodoji is also a good option.

Which Route Is Recommended?

If you want to make the descent from Tairyuji easier, the public transportation route using the ropeway is recommended.

However, because public transportation involves transfers and waiting times, it is not necessarily much faster than walking.

Therefore, when choosing between the two, consider “paying ¥2,120 to use the ropeway and other public transportation to reduce the physical burden of walking, or walking the entire route in about 4 hours,” and choose the route that best suits your energy level and available time.
