Train Route from Maegamiji Temple to Sankakuji Temple
You can travel from Temple 64, Maegamiji Temple to Temple 65, Sankakuji Temple by train using the JR Yosan Line.
This is a long section of approximately 45 km and takes about two days on foot. However, by combining walking and train travel, you can reach Sankakuji Temple in approximately 3 hours for ¥980.
From Maegamiji Temple, walk to Ishizuchiyama Station, then take the JR Yosan Line to Iyo-Mishima Station. From Iyo-Mishima Station, it is about a 5 km walk to Sankakuji Temple.
Sankakuji Temple is a mountain temple located at an elevation of approximately 500 meters, so another option is to stay overnight around Iyo-Mishima Station and visit Sankakuji Temple the following day.

Comparing Public Transportation and Walking Routes
The distance from Temple 64, Maegamiji Temple, to Temple 65, Sankakuji Temple, is approximately 45 km, making it a long section that takes about two days for pilgrims traveling entirely on foot.
Compared with walking the entire distance, taking the train can significantly reduce travel time. However, you still need to walk about 5 km of mountainous terrain after getting off the train.
Save Time by Taking the Train
If you use public transportation, walk from Maegamiji Temple to Ishizuchiyama Station, then take the JR Yosan Line to Iyo-Mishima Station.
From Iyo-Mishima Station, it is approximately 5 km to Sankakuji Temple, taking about two hours on foot.
Therefore, it is easier to think of this route not as a way to avoid walking, but as a way to significantly shorten the long 45-km walking section by using the train.
Change to a Limited Express at Iyo-Saijo Station
From Ishizuchiyama Station, take the JR Yosan Line via Iyo-Saijo Station to Iyo-Mishima Station.
At Iyo-Saijo Station, you can change to a limited express train. The fare is approximately ¥980 by local train, while using a limited express costs around ¥1,740. Although the limited express is more expensive, it is faster than the local train and can be useful if you want to save time.
Choose the limited express if you prioritize time, or the local train if you want to keep costs down.
Be Prepared for the Final Climb from Iyo-Mishima Station
There are approximately 5 km from Iyo-Mishima Station to Sankakuji Temple.
Sankakuji Temple is a mountain temple located at an elevation of approximately 500 meters, so don’t assume that the route will be easy simply because it is only 5 km.
Especially during summer and other hot periods, it is a good idea to prepare enough water and food before setting out.
If you arrive at Iyo-Mishima Station late in the afternoon, you will also reach Sankakuji Temple late, so choosing an earlier train is important whenever possible.
Consider Staying Overnight in Iyo-Mishima
If you have enough time, another option is to stay overnight around Iyo-Mishima Station and head to Sankakuji Temple the following morning.
This means you do not have to push yourself to reach Sankakuji Temple on the same day, making it a convenient option if you are already tired from walking.
Starting for Sankakuji Temple the following morning also makes it easier to plan your onward journey toward Temple 66, Unpenji Temple.
Which Route Should You Choose?
If you have plenty of time and enjoy long-distance walking, you can choose to walk the entire 45 km as part of your pilgrimage.
On the other hand, if you want to shorten a journey that would otherwise take about two days, taking the JR Yosan Line is recommended.
However, even when using the train, you still have to walk the final 5 km, so you should plan with the entire journey to Sankakuji Temple in mind.
The key to this section is not simply getting to Iyo-Mishima Station by train, but also planning how you will tackle the approximately 5-km walk from the station to Sankakuji Temple.
