History & Highlights
Butsumokuji is traditionally believed to have been founded by Kōbō Daishi, who was guided to this place by the light of a sacred jewel. The temple has long been revered as a protector of cattle and horses, and today many people visit to pray for the health of their animals or to hold memorial services for beloved pets and livestock. One of the temple’s distinctive features is the Livestock Hall (Kachikudō) within the temple grounds.

My Walking Experience
Butsumokuji is located about 3 km (1.9 miles) north of Ryukoji. The route follows Prefectural Route 31 and is straightforward, making it difficult to get lost.
If you’re walking the pilgrimage, you can take the pilgrimage trail at the back of the Ryukoji temple grounds. It provides a convenient shortcut before rejoining the main road.
Along the way, you’ll pass through the peaceful rice fields of the Mima area. After several long-distance stages, this quiet stretch offers a welcome chance to relax and enjoy the tranquil countryside.
