Ropeway Route from Kakurinji to Tairyuji

You can travel from Temple 20, Kakurinji Temple, to Temple 21, Tairyuji Temple, by ropeway.

Walking the entire route takes approximately 7 km and 4.5 hours. It is a challenging section where you first descend from Kakurinji Temple into the valley before climbing back up toward Tairyuji Temple.

The Tairyuji Ropeway takes approximately 10 minutes and costs ¥1,300 one way. However, you need to walk approximately 9.5 km from Kakurinji Temple to Washinosato, where the ropeway station is located.

Comparing the Ropeway and Walking Routes

Although the distance from Kakurinji Temple to Tairyuji Temple is only about 7 km, this is a challenging section of the pilgrimage route with a significant elevation change, known as one of the “Henro Korogashi” (pilgrim’s tumbles).

Even if you take the ropeway, you still need to walk from Kakurinji Temple to the ropeway station. Which option is best depends on your physical condition and available time.

Taking the Ropeway

From Kakurinji Temple, first descend approximately 5 km to the Naka River. After crossing Suibashi Bridge, walk approximately 7 km along the prefectural road to reach the ropeway station at Roadside Station Washinosato.

The ropeway takes approximately 10 minutes to reach the Tairyuji side. Since you can avoid the steep climb to the temple, it is a good option if you want to conserve your energy.

Walking the Entire Route

If you walk, cross Suibashi Bridge and continue to the Tairyuji trailhead, then climb to Tairyuji Temple at an elevation of approximately 500 meters.

Although the distance is shorter than the ropeway route, you first descend into the valley and then have to climb back up, making this a physically demanding section.

This section is known as one of the most challenging parts of the pilgrimage, comparable to the climb to Shosanji Temple (Temple 12). So choose your route according to the weather and your physical condition.

The key choice for this section is whether to “walk a shorter distance” or “walk farther but use the ropeway to avoid the final climb.”
