I have completed the Shikoku Pilgrimage on foot twice, combining both the clockwise and counterclockwise routes.

In this article, I’ll introduce recommended accommodations around Temples No. 82–83 of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage. Based on my own experience, I’ve compiled convenient lodging options for both walking pilgrims and those traveling by car, as well as accommodations in the Takamatsu and Ritsurin areas. If you plan to walk through the Goshikidai mountain section or want to move efficiently to the next temple, I hope you’ll find this helpful.

The area around Temples No. 82–83 is the section where you cross the mountain roads of Goshikidai and enter downtown Takamatsu. For walking pilgrims, staying around Ritsurin is convenient, while for those traveling by car, the area around Takamatsu Chuo Interchange makes an efficient base.

For Walking Pilgrims

If you’re traveling the pilgrimage on foot, accommodations in the Takamatsu and Ritsurin areas are highly recommended. There are relatively few places to stay around Temple No. 82, and after crossing the Goshikidai mountain area, fatigue tends to build up. Going a little farther into the city and staying there can make the next day’s journey much easier.

Two particularly recommended options are Guest House Wakabaya and Hostel JAQ Takamatsu. They are budget-friendly, and there are convenience stores and restaurants nearby. During a walking pilgrimage, having access to facilities for things like restocking supplies and doing laundry becomes surprisingly important, so considering amenities as well as price can make your stay much more comfortable.

For Car Pilgrims

For those traveling by car, Extol Inn Takamatsu Chuo Inter is highly recommended. It is conveniently located near the Takamatsu Chuo Interchange, making it easy to continue toward Temples No. 83–84.

Since car pilgrims spend less time walking, factors such as parking convenience and accessibility become just as important as proximity to the temples. Choosing accommodations with features like a public bath and breakfast service can also help relieve fatigue from long hours of driving.

In addition, the distance between Temple No. 83 and Temple No. 85 is relatively short, so using central Takamatsu as a base can make the route more efficient.

Best Budget-Friendly Options

If you’d like to keep accommodation costs as low as possible, guesthouses and dormitory-style lodging are good choices.

Options such as Minshuku Setouchi, TEN to SEN Guest House Takamatsu, and Hostel JAQ Takamatsu are generally affordable and well suited for people walking the pilgrimage over a longer period.

During my own walking pilgrimage, there were times when I wanted to reduce accommodation expenses, and even small savings can make a big difference over a long journey. However, rather than choosing solely based on price, it’s also worth checking factors such as laundry facilities and location, which can significantly improve overall comfort.

Features of the Temple No. 82–83 Area: Read Before Choosing Accommodation

The Route Between Temples No. 81 and 82 Can Be Physically Demanding Due to the Goshikidai Mountain Roads

After Temple No. 83, You Enter Central Takamatsu Where Accommodation Options Increase

After passing Temple No. 83, the route enters central Takamatsu, where the number of accommodation choices increases significantly, including hotels, guesthouses, and business hotels. There are also many convenience stores and restaurants, making it easy to find meals and prepare for the next day.

While accommodation options around Temple No. 82 are limited, moving farther into the Takamatsu or Ritsurin area gives you more flexibility based on your budget and preferred lodging style. If you’re unsure where to stay, heading into the city is a good option.

My Recommended Accommodation Pattern Based on My Experience

When I completed the pilgrimage on foot, I felt that this was not a section worth overloading into a tight schedule. The distance between Temple No. 82 and Temple No. 83 is about 12 km (7.5 miles), and the distance between Temple No. 83 and Temple No. 84 is approximately 14 km (8.7 miles).

Looking only at the distance, it may seem possible to cover everything in one day. However, once you add temple visits, rest breaks, and the elevation changes of Goshikidai, it often becomes more tiring than expected.

Personally, I would recommend visiting Temples No. 82–83 and then staying around the Ritsurin area. There are plenty of accommodation options, along with restaurants and supermarkets, making it a convenient place to stop. Starting the next day well-rested also makes it easier to continue toward Temples No. 84–85 without creating an overly demanding schedule.

Note: Walking pace varies from person to person, but especially during summer or if you are carrying heavy luggage, allowing extra time in your itinerary is recommended.

If I had to choose just one place to stay in the Temple No. 82–83 area, it would be Guest House Wakabaya. The reason is simple: it works well for both walking pilgrims and car pilgrims, while also providing convenient access to central Takamatsu.

From my experience, during a pilgrimage, the accommodation itself is often less important than how easily it allows you to continue your journey the next day. Wakabaya makes it easy to plan your route toward Temples No. 84–85, and you also have convenient access to necessities such as laundry facilities and places to eat.
