Recommended Accommodation: Temples 84–88 in Kagawa

Accommodation Guide in kagawa

Hello. I’m Taka, the owner of this blog.
I have completed the Shikoku Pilgrimage on foot twice, combining both the clockwise route and the reverse route.

Temples 84–88 are the final section of the Shikoku 88-temple pilgrimage. For walking pilgrims, this area can be physically demanding because of elevation changes and mountain paths. When choosing accommodation, it is important to consider not only the distance from the temples but also how convenient the location will be for the next day’s travel. In this article, I’ll introduce recommended accommodations for walking pilgrims, car pilgrims, and budget-conscious travelers, while also explaining the best areas to stay and how to choose lodging based on my experience of completing the walking pilgrimage twice.

If you need to choose quickly:

🥇 innTEKTEK
→ Best for walking pilgrims. Conveniently located near Temple No. 87, Nagao-ji, making it easier to head toward Temple No. 88, Okubo-ji.

🥈 Yasokubo
→ Located near Temple No. 88, Okubo-ji. Ideal if you want to relax after completing the pilgrimage.

🥉 Tresta Shirayama
→ Includes hot springs. Recommended for car pilgrims or those prioritizing comfort.

Recommended Accommodations for Temples 84–88

For Walking Pilgrims and Car Pilgrims.

The Temple 84–88 area is a section with many mountain roads and elevation changes, stretching from Yashima-ji to Okubo-ji. Your choice of accommodation can significantly affect how difficult the following day will be. Especially for walking pilgrims, choosing the wrong place to stay can greatly increase the next day’s travel distance and physical fatigue.

I completed the pilgrimage route twice on foot, combining both clockwise and reverse routes, and I recommend choosing accommodation based not only on how close it is to the temples, but also on how convenient it makes the next day’s travel.

Here, I’ll introduce recommended accommodations in three categories: for walking pilgrims, car pilgrims, and budget-conscious travelers.

Recommended Accommodations for Walking Pilgrims

For walking pilgrims, accommodations around Temples 86–87 are recommended.

Temple No. 84, Yashima-ji, and Temple No. 85, Yakuri-ji, are both located at around 300 meters above sea level, and there are mountain paths before reaching Temple No. 88, Okubo-ji. Rather than pushing yourself too far in a single day, it is often easier to stay somewhere that reduces the burden for the following day.

Recommended options include:

  • innTEKTEK → Located near Temple No. 87, Nagao-ji, making it easier to head toward Temple No. 88, Okubo-ji the next day
  • Ketsugan no Yado Nagaoji → Convenient location and popular among pilgrims
  • Yasokubo → A popular choice before or after completing the pilgrimage

If I had to choose just one, I would pick innTEKTEK. It helps you conserve more energy for the final day of a walking pilgrimage.

Recommended Accommodations for Car Pilgrims

For car pilgrims, hotels with convenient access are recommended, even if they are slightly farther from the temples.

Since driving reduces the burden of travel distance, you can prioritize parking availability, facilities, and overall comfort.

Recommended options:

  • Tresta Shirayama → Equipped with hot springs and extensive facilities
  • Hotel Taiyo Noen Yashima → Convenient parking access
  • Nodaya Takeyashiki → Ideal for those who want to relax near Temple No. 88

For car pilgrims, being several kilometers away from the temples is generally not a major issue.

Recommended Budget-Friendly Accommodations

If you want to keep accommodation costs as low as possible, guesthouses and traditional inns are good choices.

Walking pilgrims often stay overnight many times during the journey, so even a difference of a few thousand yen per night can add up significantly over the entire trip.

Recommended budget options:

  • 60 Guest House
  • Ketsugan no Yado Nagaoji
  • innTEKTEK
  • Yasokubo

However, accommodations can become fully booked during peak pilgrimage seasons, especially in spring and autumn. Lodging options around Temple No. 88, Okubo-ji, are limited, so making reservations early is recommended.

Walking Pilgrimage Warning: Important Things to Know About the Temple 84–88 Area Before Choosing Accommodation

The Temple 84–88 section is the final stage of the Shikoku 88-temple pilgrimage and is an area where walking pilgrims can easily become physically exhausted.

Temple No. 84, Yashima-ji, and Temple No. 85, Yakuri-ji, are both located at an elevation of around 300 meters. Although the distances between the temples are not extremely long, the repeated ascents and descents require more time and energy than many walking pilgrims expect.

View from the Yashima-ji pilgrimage trail: Yakuri-ji Temple can be seen on the mountain in the distance.

In addition, the route toward Temple No. 88, Okubo-ji, includes a path that crosses Mount Nyotai (approximately 700 meters). Parts of the route include chains and steeper sections, and it is often considered one of the final challenging sections for walking pilgrims.

For that reason, when choosing accommodation, I recommend considering not only how close it is to the temple, but also the next day’s travel distance and your energy management.

For walking pilgrims in particular, staying around Temples 86–87 can make it easier to continue toward Temple No. 88, Okubo-ji, the following day.

Based on Two Walking Pilgrimages: My Recommended Accommodation Pattern

Based on my experience, I found it much easier to stay around Temple No. 87, Nagao-ji, rather than trying to force the entire Temple 84–88 section into a single day.

I recommend the following schedule:

Day 1
Temple No. 84 Yashima-ji → Temple No. 85 Yakuri-ji → Temple No. 86 Shido-ji → Stay near Temple No. 87 Nagao-ji

Day 2
Temple No. 87 Nagao-ji → Temple No. 88 Okubo-ji (completion of the pilgrimage)

By staying near Temple No. 87, you can focus on reaching Temple No. 88, Okubo-ji the next day without overexerting yourself.

If I were choosing accommodations, I would select innTEKTEK or Ketsugan no Yado Nagaoji. Both are located near Nagao-ji and can help reduce the burden of the following day’s travel.

Reservations Near Temple No. 88, Okubo-ji Should Be Made Early

Temple No. 88, Okubo-ji, is well known as the final temple of the Shikoku pilgrimage route, and there are not many accommodation options in the surrounding area.

During pilgrimage seasons, especially in spring and autumn, reservations can fill up quickly. When I tried to stay at Yasokubo, it was already fully booked.

If you plan to stay overnight on the day you complete the pilgrimage, making reservations as early as possible is recommended.
