History & Highlights
Jorakuji is an ancient temple said to have been founded by Kōbō Daishi after receiving a vision of Miroku Bosatsu (Maitreya Bodhisattva). It is the only temple on the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage whose principal deity is Miroku Bosatsu. After being destroyed during a period of war, the temple was rebuilt and is now renowned for its historic grounds, including the scenic Ryūsuigan Garden, where exposed natural bedrock forms a distinctive landscape.

My Walking Experience
The route from Dainichiji to Jorakuji is straightforward. Simply cross Ichinomiya Bridge over the Ayukui River and continue north. As long as you use the bridge as your landmark, you’ll have little trouble finding your way to Jorakuji.
What impressed me most at Jorakuji was the Ryūsuigan Garden, where natural bedrock is exposed throughout part of the temple grounds. Rather than covering the rock, the garden incorporates it into the landscape, creating a scene unlike those at most other temples on the Shikoku Pilgrimage. Of all the temple grounds I visited while walking the 88-temple route, this was one of the most memorable. Be sure to look down as well as around while exploring the temple.
