History & Highlights
Konsenji is an ancient temple said to have been founded by Gyōki. Its name is derived from the “Golden Well,” a sacred spring believed to have been dug by Kōbō Daishi. The temple is also known for its connections to the Imperial Family and Minamoto no Yoshitsune, and attracts many worshippers who come to pray for longevity and good fortune.

My Walking Experience
The Walk from Gokurakuji to Konsenji
The route from Gokurakuji to Konsenji is straightforward—simply head west. The distance is short, and there is little chance of losing your way. Just follow the temple signposts, and you’ll have no trouble reaching Konsenji.
A Path Shared by Pilgrims at the Beginning and End of Their Journey
This section is often walked by pilgrims making their Orei Mairi (thanksgiving pilgrimage) after completing all 88 temples and returning to Temple No. 1.
During my first pilgrimage, I met a pilgrim who had completed the entire circuit and was on the way to Ryōzenji for Orei Mairi. When they told me, “I’m heading to Temple No. 1 now,” the sense of fulfillment on their face left a lasting impression.
Later, when I walked this same road during my own Orei Mairi, I passed a foreign pilgrim who had only just begun the pilgrimage. It was a memorable moment to see pilgrims at two very different stages of the journey—one just starting out and another returning after completing all 88 temples—sharing the very same path.
