History & Highlights
Tanemaji is said to have originated when a Buddhist sculptor from Baekje enshrined a statue of Yakushi Nyorai (the Medicine Buddha) to pray for safe sea voyages. The temple was later founded by Kōbō Daishi, who is said to have scattered the seeds of the five grains here, giving the temple its name, which means “Seed Temple.” Today, Tanemaji is widely revered for Yakushi Nyorai, who is believed to grant blessings for safe childbirth.

My Walking Experience
Walking the Traditional Pilgrimage Trail
Tanemaji is located about 6 km (3.7 miles) west of Sekkeiji.
Although the route along Prefectural Route 278 is straightforward, the traditional pilgrimage trail, marked by pilgrimage signposts, offers a much more atmospheric walk through peaceful countryside and rice fields.
I chose the traditional route. Along the way, a local farmer kindly offered me fresh tomatoes as osettai (pilgrim hospitality). Encounters like these with local people are one of the greatest pleasures of following the historic pilgrimage paths.
After passing through the rural landscape, the route crosses the Shinkawa River. Continue west from there, and you’ll soon arrive at Tanemaji.
