History & Highlights
Hantaji is a historic temple said to have been founded by Gyōki and later visited by Kūkai (Kōbō Daishi). The temple has strong connections to both the Imperial Family and the Tokugawa clan and has long attracted the devotion of many worshippers. Its hilltop location also offers beautiful views over the city of Matsuyama.

My Walking Experience
Hantaji is located about 2 km (1.2 miles) north of Jodoji.
Follow Prefectural Route 40 north and turn onto a narrow side road on the right. A large stone pillar, about the height of a person, marks the entrance and is easy to spot. Continue along the road for about 1 km (0.6 miles) and you will arrive at Hantaji.
I was unable to reach the temple before the 5:00 p.m. nōkyō office closing time, so I stayed overnight in Dōgo Onsen and visited Hantaji the following morning. The temple is only about 5 km (3.1 miles) from Dōgo, making it easily accessible on foot.
On that winter morning, Hantaji was wrapped in a solemn and peaceful atmosphere. There was only one other visitor in the temple grounds. I still remember warming my cold hands with my breath as I lit a candle and quietly offered my prayers in the silence of the early morning.
Highlights of Hantaji
Hantaji stands on a hill about 80 m (262 ft) above sea level, offering views over Matsuyama City. Together with the nearby reservoir, the elevated setting creates a pleasant sense of openness.
Behind the temple grounds lies a dense forest, giving the area a surprisingly tranquil atmosphere despite its proximity to the city.
Another highlight is the bell tower, whose ceiling is decorated with 24 painted panels. Be sure to look up and admire these beautiful ceiling paintings during your visit.
