History & Highlights
Idoji is an ancient temple said to have been founded under the imperial decree of Emperor Tenmu. Later, Kōbō Daishi carved a statue of Jūichimen Kannon (Eleven-Headed Avalokiteśvara) and caused a sacred spring to emerge, giving the temple its present name. After being destroyed during a period of war, it was rebuilt and is now known for enshrining the Seven Yakushi Buddhas, making it one of the distinctive temples on the Shikoku Pilgrimage.

My Walking Experience
The route from Kanonji to Idoji heads north, crossing National Route 318 and the JR Tokushima Line railway crossing.
While the sections around Fujii-dera and Shosanji are dominated by mountain trails and quiet roads, this part of the pilgrimage passes through a more developed area with restaurants, convenience stores, and other places to buy food and drinks. With plenty of opportunities to rest and resupply, it is a relatively comfortable section to walk. However, you’ll also encounter busier roads, so be sure to stay alert for traffic.
The Well That Gave the Temple Its Name
Within the temple grounds is a well said to have been dug overnight by Kōbō Daishi. This sacred well gave Idoji its name and is one of the temple’s most notable attractions, so it’s well worth visiting during your pilgrimage.
