History & Highlights
Yasakaji is said to have been founded by En no Gyōja and later restored by Kūkai (Kōbō Daishi). It flourished as a center of Shugendō mountain asceticism and is now best known for its principal image of Amida Nyorai (Amitābha Buddha) and the approximately 8,000 Amida statues enshrined in the underground hall beneath the Main Hall.

My Walking Experience
Yasakaji is located about 1 km (0.6 miles) north of Joruriji. Directional signs are posted along the way, so simply following the arrows will make the route easy to navigate.
The pilgrimage trail descends gently through terraced fields and peaceful farmland. With little traffic, this is a quiet section where you can enjoy the relaxing scenery of the rural countryside. On a sunny day, it offers one of those calm, unhurried moments that make walking the Shikoku Pilgrimage so memorable.
One of the highlights of Yasakaji is the Mantai Amida beneath the Main Hall.
This underground hall houses approximately 8,000 Amitābha (Amida) Buddha statues dedicated by worshippers from across Japan, and admission is free.
Its tranquil atmosphere contrasts with the temple grounds above, making it well worth a visit during your pilgrimage.
