History & Highlights
Gokurakuji is an ancient temple said to have been founded by Kōbō Daishi after receiving a vision of Amida Nyorai (Amitābha Buddha). After being destroyed during a period of war, it was rebuilt and is now known for its many attractions, including a Pure Land-style garden, the Chōmei Cedar, a sacred cedar tree estimated to be around 1,200 years old, and the Anzan Daishi, who is revered for safe childbirth.

My Walking Experience
The route from Ryōzenji to Gokurakuji is straightforward—simply follow Prefectural Route 12 west. The distance is short, and there is little chance of losing your way.
As you approach the temple, you’ll soon see its impressive vermilion temple gate on your right, making Gokurakuji easy to recognize.
