History & Highlights

Enmyoji is said to have been founded by Gyōki and later restored by Kūkai (Kōbō Daishi). The temple is known for preserving the oldest surviving bronze pilgrimage name slip (osamefuda) in the Shikoku Pilgrimage. With historic features such as the Kirishitan Lantern, it remains a beloved temple where visitors can experience the rich history of the pilgrimage.

My Walking Experience

Enmyoji is located about 3 km (1.9 miles) east of Taisanji. If you follow the prefectural road, it is a straightforward route and you should have no difficulty finding your way.

The route passes through peaceful farmland, offering a rural landscape that is hard to imagine being so close to central Matsuyama. After completing the climb up to Taisanji, I found this mostly flat section much easier and more relaxing to walk.

As you approach Enmyoji, the large trees within the temple grounds come into view, making the temple easy to recognize even from a distance.

Highlights of Enmyoji

Located on flat ground, Enmyoji is an easy temple to visit, with a calm and welcoming atmosphere throughout the grounds.

One of the temple’s unique features is a stone lantern known as the “Kirishitan Lantern.” A figure believed by some to represent the Virgin Mary is carved into the lantern, and it is said that such objects may have been used by hidden Christians as a symbol of their faith during times when Christianity was prohibited in Japan.
