Recommended Accommodation: Temples 38–39 Route 1

Accommodation Guide in Kochi

Hello, I’m Taka, the owner of this blog.
I have completed the Shikoku Pilgrimage on foot twice, including both the clockwise and counterclockwise routes.

There are two main routes from the 38th temple to the 39th temple. One route returns toward the Shimanto area before continuing through Mihara Village. The other route continues west directly from Cape Ashizuri toward Sukumo.

In this article, I’ll introduce accommodations located along the route that passes through Mihara Village.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q
How far is it from the 38th temple to the 39th temple?
A

The distance depends on the route, but the route through Mihara Village is approximately 50 km in total.

Because the route passes through mountainous areas, it is important to allow more time than you would for a flat route.

Q
Can walking pilgrims use the Mihara Village route?
A

Yes.

However, some sections have very few shops or vending machines, so it is recommended to prepare food and drinks in advance.

Q
Is the Sukumo area convenient for accommodation?
A

Yes.

Downtown Sukumo has a good selection of hotels, business hotels, and guesthouses, making it one of the easiest areas to find accommodation.

There are also many restaurants and convenience stores, making it a convenient base for pilgrims.

Q
Is there a difference in choosing accommodations for car pilgrims and walking pilgrims?
A

Yes.

For pilgrims traveling by car, parking availability and easy road access are especially important.

For walking pilgrims, it is usually more comfortable to choose accommodations based on distance from the temples and access to food and supplies along the route.

Q
Can I find accommodations on the same day?
A

It may be possible during quieter periods, but accommodations can become fully booked during tourist seasons and pilgrimage seasons, so advance reservations are recommended.

This is especially true for smaller guesthouses and family-run inns, where booking early provides greater peace of mind.

Summary

The route through Mihara Village from the 38th temple to the 39th temple is a quiet pilgrimage route that passes through mountainous areas, making advance preparation especially important. Since there are few places to buy supplies along the way, choosing the right accommodations can greatly affect the comfort of a walking pilgrimage.

Around Mihara Village, you will find peaceful accommodations surrounded by nature, while continuing on to downtown Sukumo provides a much wider range of lodging options.

In particular, the Sukumo area is highly convenient as a travel base, with restaurants, transportation, and accommodations all easily available.
