History & Highlights
Jurakuji is an ancient temple said to have been founded by Kōbō Daishi, who received a vision of Amida Nyorai (Amitābha Buddha) at this site. Its name, meaning “Temple of Ten Joys,” is derived from the ten rays of light and ten blessings associated with Amida Buddha. After being destroyed during a time of war, the temple was rebuilt and is now known for its Jizō Bodhisattva, revered for healing eye ailments, and Aizen Myōō, who is worshipped as a deity of love and relationships.

My Walking Experience
The route from Anrakuji to Jurakuji is straightforward—simply head west, with little chance of losing your way. If you follow the pilgrimage signs, you can take the traditional route through narrow residential streets. Alternatively, you can choose the wider prefectural road. Both routes lead to Jurakuji.
Jurakuji is easy to spot thanks to its distinctive Ryukyuan-style temple gate, which stands out prominently as you approach.
