History & Highlights
Konzoji Temple is known as the birthplace of Chisho Daishi Enchin, the nephew of Kobo Daishi and the founder of the Tendai Jimon school.
According to tradition, it was originally founded by Wake no Michiyoshi, and later Chisho Daishi developed the temple grounds and enshrined Yakushi Nyorai as the principal image. The temple continues to be deeply revered as a sacred place associated with Chisho Daishi.

My Walking Experience
Konzoji Temple is located approximately 4 km north of Zentsuji Temple.
After leaving Zentsuji, head toward JR Zentsuji Station, cross the railway crossing, and continue north along Prefectural Route 25. After passing under the Takamatsu Expressway, you will see signs directing you to Konzoji Temple.
The temple grounds are flat with few steps, making it easy to visit even for pilgrims traveling on foot. After visiting the vast grounds of Zentsuji just before, I found Konzoji to have a quieter and more familiar atmosphere.
Another memorable feature was the torii gate within the temple grounds leading to the adjacent shrine. The coexistence of Buddhist and Shinto elements creates a unique landscape that reflects Japan’s religious history.
History and Highlights of Konzoji Temple
The Birthplace of Chisho Daishi
Konzoji Temple is famous as the birthplace of Chisho Daishi Enchin, the founder of the Tendai Jimon school and the nephew of Kobo Daishi Kukai.
The temple was originally known as “Matsuoji,” but the current name “Konzoji” is said to have been given in 928 by imperial order of Emperor Daigo, taking its name from the local area of Konzo-go.
The Legend of Nichido-maru and Kishimojin
In his childhood, Chisho Daishi was known as “Nichido-maru” and was said to have shown exceptional abilities from a young age.
According to legend, when he was only two years old, a radiant light appeared from his body, leading people to wonder if he was a reincarnation of the Buddha.
Another legend tells that when he was five years old, Kishimojin appeared before him and promised to protect him if he entered the Buddhist path in the future.
Today, Konzoji continues to be deeply revered as a temple connected with the life of Chisho Daishi.
