History & Highlights
Ryozenji is the first temple of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage. It is said that Kōbō Daishi performed sacred rites here and prayed for the establishment of the pilgrimage. Known as the Temple of Awakening the Aspiration (Hotsugan no Tera), it is where many pilgrims begin their journey. Having survived wars and fires before being rebuilt, Ryozenji remains a temple of great historical and spiritual significance.

My Walking Experience
Easy Access from Bandō Station
Ryozenji is easily accessible from Bandō Station on the JR Kōtoku Line. The temple is about a 10-minute walk from the station.

The Starting Point of the Shikoku Pilgrimage
Ryozenji is Temple No. 1 of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage. Although pilgrims are not required to begin at the first temple, many choose to start their journey here. I also began my own walking pilgrimage from Ryozenji.
A Convenient Place to Buy Pilgrimage Equipment
Ryozenji is an ideal place to purchase essential pilgrimage items, including a nōkyōchō (pilgrim’s stamp book) and a kongō-zue (pilgrim’s walking staff). If you’re planning your first pilgrimage, I explain what to prepare in detail in a separate guide.

Nearby Accommodation
If you plan to stay near Ryozenji or between the surrounding pilgrimage temples, see the article below.
